Geek Toys: Trek Incite 6i

Yesterday afternoon I took my Trek 4300 in to Oliver’s Cycle Sports for a tune-up and flat-tire fix. I ride 30 miles every week, and on my last excursion, my rear-tire got a flat (thorns were the culprit). Walking back those last few miles in the baking Tampa sun was pretty exhausting…

Considering that the store offers a free flat tire replacement and tune-up within the first year of purchase, and the fact that I could now take my bike into the shop (no car seat to worry about now), I spent a few hours on Sunday afternoon at the bike shop.

While I was there, the bike-geek bug bit me, and I purchased a Trek Incite 6i ‘computer’. Basically, it’s a small digital unit that works with a sensor to monitor your speed, max speed, mileage, and time. Gil, the resident mechanic at the store that afternoon, installed the unit for me as well.

Installation involved mounting the ‘computer’ on the handlebar, coiling the cabling down to the front brake area, and placing a sensor on the front wheel spoke.

The included directions were sparse, and in my ride this afternoon, while I could quickly toggle between trip odometer, time of day, speed, and total mileage, I still need to figure out how to reset the trip odometer. The directions mention two terms:

  1. ReSet
  2. ReStart

The manual explains the difference between the two - but I haven’t been able to deduce how to perform either function.

From a physical standpoint, the ‘computer’ appears to be well built. It detaches easily enough - for those times where you have to leave your bike unattended. The on-board display itself was easy to read, even against the bright sunlight.

As I continue to ride, I’m sure I’ll get the overall hang of things. The InCite 6i retails for $29.95 and is recommended for cyclists that want to have access to such information at their fingertips.
